The red umbrella is a world recognized symbol for sex worker rights. Most sources credit a march in Venice in 2001 with the first use.
A red umbrella symbol is used by many organizations including Global Network of Sexwork Projects (check out their interactive timeline!) SWOP, New Zealand Prostitutes’ Collective and Red Umbrella Fund.
